Who Can Receive Social Security Disability...
There are 6 rules, or factors of entitlement,
you must meet before you can qualify for Social
Security Disability Benefits. These rules are set forth in the law,
the Social Security Act. They are:
You must not yet be
Full Retirement Age when you become disabled. (In 2004, this means you
must not yet be age 65 plus 4 months. In 2005, full retirement age will
be age 65 plus 6 months.)
You must have enough work credits (often called Quarters of Coverage) to be
considered
Fully Insured under the Social Security Act.
You must also have enough work credits (Quarters of Coverage) to meet
Disability Insured Status under the Social Security Act.
You must be considered medically
disabled as defined in the Social Security Act.
You must file an application requesting entitlement to disability benefits with
the Social Security Administration.
You must serve a waiting period of 5 full calendar months from the date your
disability began before any Social Security Disability benefits can be payable
to you.
